My cats are named Radish and Reuben, and they have the personality to match a spicy vegetable and a meat sandwich.

Both my cats are named after food. Peanut (a ginger/white bellied girl) and Porter (like the beer), our all black cat with delightful fangs.

This currently only lives in my head, but I do plan to name a future cat Fig. I'm also enamored by pets named after other animals. I have a cat named Owl (who very much lives up to her namesake) and a former beloved cat named Cricket. I once met a dog named Pigeon. Pigeon!!

This post has taken me down a rabbit hole of supporting local book stores. This is the first I've heard of Bookshop and love the concept! However, I largely read on ebook.

Does anyone know of a way to support local book stores when buying ebooks? That would truly be a game changer!

this is a very good question!!! this is a helpful resource: https://blog.libro.fm/your-guide-to-independent-alternatives-for-books-audiobooks-and-ebooks/

Oh I love this! I'm very intrigued that Kindle Unlimited seems to help new authors get a foot in the door.

Another option that supports authors: I mostly read ebooks through the Libby app and my library, and you can request books there if your library doesn't have them. At least 10 times, my library has purchased an ebook or audiobook because I've requested it, and authors can get a small cut when books are checked out.

Definitely! It’s our shibboleth 😂 I’ve been in Chicago for over a decade now… and while I don’t have the Fargo accent, my family definitely does, uffda

Every summer my friends and I celebrate a fruit, trying it in new ways, it’s represented at every dinner we have, and really it’s mostly an excuse to have a party lol. But this summer is the Summer of the Cherry! So I’ll definitely be making the jam! Did a vegan cherry crumble for my work team that was also excellent this week

Just FYI, the Skokie Lagoons aren't in Skokie the suburb. They're in Glencoe. The word Skokie means marsh/wetland in Potawatomi. The suburb Skokie was originally called Niles Center, but was renamed in the late 30s because Niles is also a town and it was messing up the mail. 😁

(Resident of Skokie, lover of Skokie lagoons. Grew up in Berwyn, and occasionally had to correct people who thought I lived on Berwyn the street, which is NOWHERE near Berwyn the suburb.🤣)

oh my GOSH KALI thank you for this very kind correction!!!!!!!

:D I have way too much random local knowledge sometimes. There are so many repeated names in the Chicago area, or similar names, or the township and the village are similar names but different areas, and then you get into the whole 'let's name our town hill/mount despite being flat as a pancake' thing . . . . There are some interesting stories as to why suburbs were named what they are. When I moved to Skokie, the village seal contained Native imagery including an arrowhead and a headdress-wearing man. Part of the name change TO Skokie was meant to be in honor of the area's Native heritage, and the imagery followed suit - but what worked for the well-meaning yet probably ignorant in the 40s was thankfully changed. https://patch.com/illinois/skokie/skokie-redesign-village-seal-remove-image-native-american-man

LOOOOVEEEE this knowledge. Never thought to look up why the Skokie Lagoons were called that - just knew they bordered the Botanic Garden. And the Chicago birding groups loooove them for obvious bird reasons - and went nuts last year when the wayward limpkin was there last year.

I love weird chicago history! Thanks for the info about Skokie. What a weird and wonderful place.

Update: I started Little Rot and it contains a lot of very graphic/traumatic content, including pedophilia. I'm not going to be able to keep reading it. Just wanted to warn y'all that it is extremely intense and therefore not for everyone!
