When I read “I got to talk about some of my favorite books of 2024 with two of my favorite humans this week” my first thought was “oh goody, a new book roundup episode of Nerdette!” and then I remembered 🥲. Glad you still get to have fun on-air conversations, and I love this list!
Soooo agree with Ministry of time, Martyr!, and Beautyland! I feel like being “weird and authentic” was the theme of the year, and it’s actually my ideal theme anyway lol! Other loves of mine from 2024: The Tainted Cup, The Book of Doors, The Fox Wife, Poor Deer, The Book of Love, The Djinn Waits a Thousand Years, and Januaries: Stories of Love, Magic, and Betrayal ✨
I can't stop reading Abigail Thomas, “The Emily Dickinson of memoirists” according to Steven King. I started with the memoirs, then her fiction. Her new book, "Still Life at Eighty," is the latest memoir and just came out last month.
Greta! Have you read the new Richard Powers? I LOVED _Bewilderment_ (_Overstory_ needed more editting...), but I might love _Playground_ even more-- unlikely friendships, the power of story (with a healthy dose of A.I.), deep sea life and scuba diving-- largely set in Evanston/Chicago/Urbana-Champaign. It's SO GOOD and the ending is a total chef's kiss.
Here in the UK, Beautyland still doesn’t appear to have a publisher (HOW??). That hasn’t stopped it becoming my clear favourite book of the year, amongst some strong contenders. It’s very rare for fiction to make me laugh out load or sob — Beautyland effortlessly manages both. Absolutely stunning.
Without the Nerdette eps, I don’t think I’d have made the effort to track down a copy. Thanks for continuing to share your work, Greta; wishing you lots of opportunities (and some fun income stability🤞) in 2025 xx

In no particular order my faves of 2024 were:
Beautyland
God of the Woods
The Women
James
I’m still catching up on books from 2023 too😂

Definitely adding Ministry of Time and James to my early 2025 reads. My book club just picked The Other valley for next month.

I would love the sunset/sunrise numbers!
My favorite book of the year is Seed Keeper by Diane Wilson!
I am here for all of the numbers, don't ever stop. The people need to know!
Happy holidays to you!
