HELLO, and happy new year! I have absolutely no idea what 2025 holds for any of us, but I’m so glad you are all here.
I want to talk about RESOLUTIONS because I’m really conflicted about them, and I think a lot of you might be, too. Are they a capitalist trap all about self-hatred and deprivation? Sometimes!!!
But can they also be lovely invitations to explore new things, be more gentle, and welcome ease? Absolutely!
I asked GRETAGRAM readers what some of their resolutions are, and y’all spanned the gamut gloriously. I’m sharing them here with the hope that you’ll also be inspired to come up with a resolution that feels closer to a delight than a burden.
Some people did choose resolutions based on what they think they should be doing more of, , like “drink more water” (same, Chloé!) or “cook at home more.” Lauren wants to stop texting while driving, which is VERY IMPORTANT. No one told me they’re trying to lose weight, which I found heartening! Jennifer does want to floss more, but SHOULDN’T WE ALL.
Some of you are ready for adventure. Rachel wants to learn to scuba dive. Bernadette and their sister have sister resolutions, and this year, they’re trying one new thing each month.
Many of you have monthly goals. Monica wants to bake one pie a month. Jen wants to spend more time with the cookbooks that languish on their shelf, cooking a new recipe each month. Natalie wants to try a new cheese each month!!! I love that!!!!!!!
And lots of you want to embrace your creativity. Sonja wants to knit a sweater. Someone wants to make a crossword puzzle!!! Abi plans to knit every day, and Anna wants to make a piece of clothing using a pattern!
There are also some really good pursuits of FUN. Staci wants to dance more! Heather wants to play more games! Someone wants to send birthday cards to their friends and family this year, continuing a tradition from an aunt who died in 2020.
Of course, lots of you have reading goals, too. Read for pleasure more, read one book for each letter of the alphabet, read more from the library, read a really long book.
2025 is going to be a wild year, and I really loved seeing that some of your resolutions are action-oriented. Lily wants to nurture and build stronger collectives of care with and for marginalized groups of people. Someone else wants to research and implement tools for resistance.
Some of you have some really beautiful resolutions for how you treat yourselves, too. Jaime wants to “stop talking myself out of things,” and Arionne’s resolution is to talk more kindly to herself.
I LOVED Cassandra’s resolution, which is to speak their mind more often and more forcefully. It resonates very strongly with me, as I’ve told myself I want to be bitchier in 2025. (This started as a joke, but I think it’s real, and I’m EXCITED ABOUT THAT.)
I also want to be less judgmental, to eat more salad and also more casseroles, to drink more tea in bed, to read only books I love, and to fully invest in friendships that feel good and stop forcing others.
I recently bought a lot of sage for a full cleanse of our apartment, and here’s the mantra we settled on. May it also serve you in this new year:
I am letting go of that which does not serve me. I am embracing ease, abundance, and new beginnings.
Wishing the best for y’all in what is bound to be an absolutely unhinged year! Here’s to solidarity!
P.S. Do you like this email?! Spread the delight and forward it to a friend! (Or spam an enemy, lol!)
I don't normally make resolutions in January, because it's just too hard a month - I prefer to do it around Easter when we're finally out of winter. But I have one small (but very impactful) resolution, to hang up my laundry as soon as the washing machine is done, instead of forgetting all about it and having to wash it again.
And go you, be more bitchy! I'm sure you've heard the Jane Goodall quote a gazillion times, but I love it:
It actually doesn't take much to be considered a difficult woman. That's why there are so many of us
I love all of these unique ideas. Thank you for stringing them together ❤️
Jennifer will floss after every meal once she discovers Cocofloss. It's amazing! The fibrous texture (coconut) actually pulls mysterious things out of your teeth. Guaranteed satisfaction 🦷
And Natalie should follow or read Chicago native Erika Kubick's @CheeseSexDeath. I love her quick instagram introductions to new fromages 🧀
