Hi all!!!!!
Thanks so much to everyone who came to the zoom book club hang for The God of the Woods the other day! Some of the highlights were Lidia and Ellie, who attended from Spain and England; and Emily, who dialed in from Ren Faire (“My kids are at the jousting match, so I should have some time!”); and of course Sadie, who only read a third of the book and whose jaw dropped when we told her how the book ended!
I’m really looking forward to contining this bookish experiment, so if you missed that one, don’t worry -- there’s more to come!
Speaking of book club! It is September, and that means there’s a new book to read! This month, we’re reading Danzy Senna’s Colored Television, which is OUT TODAY. I’m super excited to read this one along with you!
Also, I have a copy I’d love to give away to a paying subscriber! I’ll do the drawing first thing tomorrow, so if you want a chance to win the book, upgrade your membership today to be entered into this contest -- and all other future book giveaways!
I’d like to host the zoom discussion for this one the last weekend of September. Which of the following days/times works best for you? I’ll choose whichever one gets the most votes!
Out and about in Chicago
This fall, I’m so excited to get to curate a series of events with Chicago Humanities Festival!!! I’m a guest on their podcast today talking with the delightful Alisa Rosenthal about the different events I’m doing, how Chicago and Alaska are similar, and this very newsletter! Here’s a link to the conversation.
The first event is just around the corner, and it’s with Abra Berens!!!! I imagine you already know who she is, but if not, she’s a Michigan-based farmer and chef, and the author of three of my favorite cookbooks: Pulp, Grist, and Ruffage. The conversation is at Chop Shop on Tuesday, September 17th at 7:30 pm. Get tickets here!
Ok, that’s it for now — I’ll be back this Friday with a GIANT list of fall books. Let me know before then if there’s a title you want to make sure I include!
Have a good week!
P.S. Do you like this email?! Spread the delight and forward it to a friend! (Or spam an enemy, lol!)
I'm a long time Nerdette fan, and I've loved so many of the books that I learned about on Nerdette , so I'm excited for the book club! I'd been trying to figure out what I should read next. I'm glad to have something lined up, because I'm currently reading/listening to Bad Actors, the last of Mick Herron's Slow Horses books and I don't want them to end. Any other Slow Horses fans? I don't need to be in the drawing for the physical book because I'll will listen to the audiobook. I'm hemiplegic, which makes it hard to handle a physical book, and I have low vision, so audiobooks are my jam!
Yay book club! I think it'd be cool to have a list of resources for indie bookstores where people are buying physical books each month, I'll go first:
